The Fireplace

Erichsen's Gård is an old Rønne house whose furnished rooms and garden preserve a characteristic, middle-class environment of the second half of the nineteenth century. The grounds are a fine example of a provincial garden from the middle of the 1800's. There are activities in both house and garden throughout the season. There is a small shop.

The house was built in 1806. In 1823 it was acquired by lands inspector and Lands Department superintendent Henning Pedersen who, besides organising Bornholm's registration, designed Rønne's beautiful Town Hall in 1834 and the Rectory in Søborgstræde in Rønne from 1831. In 1830 he set a two-light dormer on his property in Laksegade and so we owe the house's style, together with its lovely garden, to Henning Pedersen. After his death in 1838, the house was acquired by Thomas Erichsen whom the place is called after. He came from Jutland having been appointed Chancellor (senior local civil servant), married a Bornholm girl, and together they had 12 children.

The house established its place in cultural history in the 1860's when Kristian Zahrtmann and Holger Drachmann moved there and let themselves be inspired by the people and the environment. Drachmann married a daughter of the house, Wilhelmine Erichsen, but the marriage was not successful.

In 1950 the Bornholm Museum purchased the house from a descendant of Thomas Erichsen, after which it was opened to the public.
