SThe main part of the treasure was found the next week and dug-up in co-operation with the museum on February 16.
The hoard was made up of at least 200 silver coins, most importantly English "Ethelred" and German coins from around the year 1000, individual Arab dirhems and small pieces of cut silver jewellery. The silver was surrounded by a dark organic material, most likely a leather purse. The top of the purse had been ploughed within the last couple of years but the bottom was preserved and could be dug up gathered in a clump of earth, in preparation for closer analysis in the National Museum's conservation department.
The silver represents a farm's "bank reserve" that was never drawn upon, presumably because its owner was kidnapped or killed.
Historical sources tell of attacks by Wendish pirates as early as the 1000's. The Gyldensgård treasure realates to the half score other silver hoards in the
Østermarie and Østerlars areas, that seem to bear witness to the unquiet times.

examples of silver coins found February 8th.

The main part of the treasure is retained in the soil in which it was found.
